Time is a created thing. To say “I don’t have time” is to say “I don’t want to.” - Lao Tzu
In honor of those reverberating words today, I am cleaning out and reorganizing my office closet. Now that I am a full-time Amazon seller and I spend more time in my home office,
I am noticing that I need a more efficient storage area. This means that my office closet is in need of a dire transformation. Follow me as I dive into this seeming black-hole of clutter.
The Clean-Out
First I needed a plan… or at least a way to tame the beast (the mess) so I stopped by my neighborhood Walmart and B-lined straight for the Office/Organization section. That is where I found some office organizing cube stackers
I have quite a few folding storage totes already in use as a primitive organizing technique that will fit perfectly into the cubbies. As soon as I got home, I got my toolbelt and hardhat and went to work building.
Now that my storage system is complete the first step in tackling the closet is to empty everything out and lay it out on my floor in front of me. YES EVERYTHING.
This will allow me to fully see every single thing in there and make a decision on what to keep, what to throw away, what to donate.
It also helps seeing everything laid out so you can see the bigger picture and sort into usable categories such as FBA equipment, Youtube recording gear, guest linens, etc.
Ready, Set, Organize!
Now that my closet is empty, I can place my new storage cubes where I think that they will make the most sense.
What is cool about these cubes is that they are stackable meaning you can take full advantage of your vertical space and organize up, not out. Now that everything is sorted I can find a new and permanent home for each item that is most ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing.
Tips for making organizing easier and more fun:
Play some fun music! Listening to your favorite tunes will make the process fun and enjoyable.
Organize with a friend or family member. This will help hold you accountable and keep you on track with your goals. You can work together so you don’t feel alone, get some new ideas, and have some fun too.
Have something to look forward to when you’re done. Reward yourself with a delicious snack or meet up with someone for a coffee or drink afterwards for all the work you’ve done.
Conclusion
Even though it can seem daunting when you are looking at a mountain of accumulated clutter that is staring right back at you, but the satisfaction and catharsis you will attain at the end will be glorious.
Not to mention how much easier it will make your life in the now and the long run. No more time endlessly throwing things on the floor looking for that one cable you need.
No more stepping over this item to get to that thing in the back, only to hit a precariously perched tower of Disney memorabilia and it falls everywhere just to spend that much more time picking it up and stacking it ever so methodically. Everything will have its place making your closet the zen get-away you never knew you needed.
